For a historic city with canals, gates and cobblestones, Leiden is very much alive. Since many locals live and work in town, almost every old building is in use, house boats float in the canals and the streets are full of bikes.
We host the oldest university of The Netherlands and students are all around. Leiden is probably the only place where students live in the most prestigious 17th century canal houses. We've got a history of welcoming newcomers like refugees, academics, craftsmen from all around the world too. You'll notice by the diversity of restaurants, bars, museums and many small festivals!
