Leeuwarden
WebsiteLeeuwarden is the humble capital of Friesland, a region with its own culture and language called Frisian. Along the canals in the historic city centre you discover where the ancestors of the Dutch Royal family lived and where M.C. Escher or Mata Hari were born. But today, one fifth of the population is student, and it's them who bring this old town to life. Plenty to go out, enough to celebrate and no tourist traps, since Leeuwarden has yet to be discovered by the big crowds.
